The Research Isn’t the Strategy: Why Insights Need Interpretation

“We’ve done the research. Why aren’t the results better?”

If you’ve ever heard this in a debrief or post-campaign review, you’re not alone.  Too often, we treat research like a finish line—when it’s really the starting point. Research reveals truths, but it doesn’t tell you what to do with them. It’s only when those insights are interpreted, shaped, and translated into communications strategy that they start to drive real-world outcomes.

Research Reveals. Strategy Interprets.

At Alchemical Insights, we believe research is invaluable—but it’s not the answer on its own. Research uncovers: What your audience thinks, feels, needs, avoids; Motivations, tensions, and opportunities; and Behavioral patterns and pain points

But here’s the catch: these insights are only raw materials. Without interpretation, they remain passive observations.

The Gap Between Knowing and Doing

Insight isn’t strategy. And data isn’t direction. You may know your audience is overwhelmed or that trust in your category is low—but what does that mean for how you communicate? What does it mean for the message, the tone, the channel mix?

That’s where many teams get stuck. They have the “what,” but they haven’t defined the “so what.”

This Is Where Communications Strategy Comes In

Communications strategy bridges the gap between insight and execution. It connects audience understanding to real-world messaging decisions:  What should we say? How should we say it? Where, when, and to whom should we say it?

It’s the lens that ensures an insight becomes a message that’s:

    • Emotionally relevant
    • Creatively actionable
    • Channel-aware
    • Aligned across teams

A single insight can lead to multiple executions—but only if someone has interpreted it into clear strategic direction.

Without Interpretation, Strategy Falls Flat

We’ve seen it firsthand:

    • A team fixates on an insight like “This audience over-indexes for X behavior,” but no one asks the next question: How big is the audience? A high index doesn’t mean high volume. Strategy demands context, not just statistics.
    • A study reveals that 99% of the target audience watches the Super Bowl. True. But when the media budget can’t support even a local spot, that insight becomes a dead end—unless it’s reinterpreted into something actionable, like tapping into Super Bowl culture via social or second-screen engagement.
    • We’ve watched smart teams cling to what the research says, even when it contradicts business realities, timelines, or brand positioning. Without strategic interpretation, insights can create paralysis, not progress.

When research is taken at face value insights are treated as conclusions, not jumping-off points, creative briefs become disconnected from constraints, and teams get stuck trying to “honor the data” instead of solving the problem. The result? Smart research, flat campaigns.

With Interpretation, Insight Becomes Activation

With communications strategy:

    • Teams align on purpose and priorities
    • Messaging is cohesive and compelling
    • Campaigns ladder up to a clear narrative
    • Audiences actually feel understood

The difference isn’t the research—it’s the thinking layered on top.

How Alchemical Insights Helps

This is our zone. We step in where the research ends—bringing it to life through strategic interpretation, message frameworks, and creative-ready guidance. We help teams:

    • Distill what matters most
    • Create clarity from the messy middle
    • Build strategies that spark action, not just admiration

Our work isn’t just about what’s true. It’s about what’s useful. What’s strategic. What moves people.

So Ask Yourself:

Do you have insights that haven’t gone anywhere?  If your research is sitting in a beautiful deck—but no one’s sure what to do with it—let’s talk. Because the research isn’t the strategy. But the right interpretation? That’s when the magic starts.
